Between the 15th and 20th centuries, several European nations built vast colonial empires. They explored, traded, and governed territories across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. This period changed politics, culture, language, and economics worldwide.

1. THE BRITISH EMPIRE

Period: 1583 - 1997
Main Colonies: India, Canada, Australia, Nigeria, Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia for a short time
Legacy: English language, common law system, railways, parliamentary democracy

At its peak in 1920, the British Empire covered 24% of Earth's land area. The slogan was "the empire on which the sun never sets". Britain focused on trade, industry, and administration. India was called "the jewel in the crown".

2. THE FRENCH EMPIRE

Period: 1534 - 1960s
Main Colonies: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Haiti
Legacy: French language, civil law, education system, cuisine

France built the second-largest empire. Their policy was "assimilation" - to make colonies culturally French. Many African countries still use French as an official language today.

3. THE SPANISH EMPIRE

Main Colonies: Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Philippines, Cuba

Spain was the first global empire after discovering America. They brought Catholic missionaries and built many churches and universities. Spanish is now the second most spoken language in the world.

4. THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE

Main Colonies: Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Goa, East Timor, Macau

Portugal was a pioneer in sea exploration. Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country. Portugal held Macau until 1999, the last European colony in Asia.

5. THE DUTCH EMPIRE

Dutch Flag

Period: 1602 - 1975
Main Colonies: Indonesia, Suriname, South Africa, Sri Lanka
Legacy: Dutch language influence, VOC trading company, plantation system

The Dutch East India Company, VOC, was the first multinational corporation. Indonesia was colonized for 350 years. The Dutch focused on spices, coffee, and sugar trade.

OTHER NOTABLE COLONIAL POWERS

Belgium: Congo - Known for rubber and mineral resources
Germany: Tanzania, Namibia, Cameroon - Lost after World War 1
Italy: Libya, Somalia, Eritrea
Japan: Korea, Taiwan, parts of China and Southeast Asia 1895-1945
Russia/USSR: Expanded across Siberia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe

IMPACT OF COLONIZATION

Positive: Spread of technology, education, infrastructure, global trade
Negative: Exploitation of resources, cultural suppression, political borders that caused future conflicts

Most colonies gained independence after World War 2, between 1945-1975.
