6 Types of Fabric for Batik: Prima, Primissima, Santung, Cotton, Fleece & Silk Complete Guide

Indonesian Batik is famous worldwide. But did you know, the quality of batik depends heavily on the type of fabric used. Each fabric has a different character for wax absorption, color, and softness.

Here are the 7 most popular types of fabric used for batik:

1. Prima Fabric

Characteristics: Coarser texture than primissima. The fabric feels stiff and thick.
Pros: Most affordable price. Strong and not easy to tear.
Cons: Poor color absorption, so batik colors look a bit dull.
Best for: Mass-produced batik cap, uniforms, budget batik fabric.

2. Primissima Fabric

Characteristics: The "younger sibling" of prima. Softer, smoother, and with tighter weave.
Pros: Excellent color absorption. Hand-drawn batik tulis results are more detailed and vibrant.
Cons: More expensive than prima.
Best for: Batik tulis, exclusive batik, batik shirts.

3. Santung Fabric

Characteristics: Traditional Javanese local cotton. Soft but slightly thick. Ivory white color.
Pros: Breathable, strong, and has a unique "slub" or uneven yarn that is a hallmark of traditional batik.
Cons: Wrinkles easily.
Best for: Traditional Solo & Yogyakarta hand-drawn batik. This is the "original" batik fabric from ancient times.

4. Cotton Fabric

Characteristics: General term. Includes rayon cotton, Japanese cotton, Bali cotton.
Pros: Breathable, absorbs sweat, comfortable for daily wear.
Cons: Depends on the type. Some are thin and wrinkle easily.
Best for: Batik dresses, modern batik shirts, batik hijabs.

5. Fleece Fabric

Characteristics: Different from the others. Fleece is soft, fuzzy polyester fabric that is thick and warm.
Pros: Thick, warm, and batik motifs don't fade because it uses printing/screening technique.
Cons: Cannot be used for batik tulis/cap because wax won't stick. Not breathable.
Best for: Batik jackets, batik hoodies, batik blankets. A trend among young people now.

6. Silk Fabric 👑

This is the king of batik fabrics.

Characteristics: Smooth, glossy, naturally shiny, and drapes beautifully. 2 types: natural silk and synthetic/polyester silk.

The Detailed Origin of Silk

Silk has been known for 5,000 years in China. Originally, only the Emperor and royal family were allowed to wear it. The secret of silk production was guarded for 3,000 years.

Silk comes from the cocoon of the silkworm species Bombyx mori. One cocoon can produce 900 - 1,500 meters of thread. The worms are fed mulberry leaves to produce the best quality silk.

Silk entered Indonesia around the 7th century through the Silk Road trade. At first, it was only worn by Kings, Nobles, and for traditional ceremonies. That's why silk batik is called "batik kraton" and is the most expensive.

The silk centers in Indonesia are in Sengkang, South Sulawesi and Trojulan, East Java. Sengkang silk is famous for being the best because the climate is perfect for silkworms.

Pros of Silk: Luxurious, naturally glossy, cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. Excellent dye absorption for natural dyes.
Cons: Most expensive. High maintenance, must be dry cleaned. Tears easily.
Best for: Silk batik tulis, bridal kebaya, batik fabric for formal events.
